realDB: A Genome Database for Red Algae

Porphyra umbilicalis

Overview
1. Membranous, one layer in thickness, olive to brown-purple fronds, to 200 mm long, irregularaly lobed and split from central holdfast.
2. Habitat: Generally on mussels, sometimes on rock; midtidal to splash zone, generally distributed, abundant, especially on exposed coasts in spring and summer.
3. Key characteristics: centrally attached fronds, lettuce-like appearance.
